Mini-Note (Netbook) Shipments to Double Y/Y to More Than 30M Units in 2009, While Notebook Shipments Flatten
Austin, Texas (Vocus) July 14, 2009
DisplaySearch expects shipments of almost 33 million mini-notes (netbooks) in 2009 as penetration of these products into the notebook PC market grows to 20% worldwide, according to its Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report. At the same time, DisplaySearch expects the market for “traditional” notebooks (those with displays 12.1″ and larger) to be flat Y/Y for the first time (see Table 1).
Penetration rates for mini-notes are forecast to exceed 26% in Latin America, and 22% in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), with the lowest penetration rates in Asia-Pacific, North America and China.
In emerging markets like Latin America, the low prices of mini-notes offer a more affordable product. In 2008, 45% of all mini-notes were shipped into EMEA markets. While this figure is forecast to drop to 40% in 2009, this share is well in excess of the region’s total share of the notebook PC market.
In many regions, telecom providers have been offering subsidized mini-notes for several quarters, which helped propel growth. In North America, the three largest telecom providers (AT&T, Sprint and Verizon) are aggressively marketing mini-notes. As smart phone penetration continues to increase in North America (and a number of other regions), it will become increasingly necessary for telecoms to find their next revenue stream as the incremental revenue increase from smart phone subscribers slows.
Penetration of mini-notes is one of the primary factors behind DisplaySearch’s expectations of flat Y/Y demand for notebook PCs. The other factor is a dramatic reduction in demand from enterprise customers. Businesses responded quickly to the economic downturn by cutting purchasing, especially of expensive IT-related products. DisplaySearch believes that there is significant pent-up demand in the B2B market as many enterprises did not upgrade from Windows XP to Vista. The launch of Windows 7 in late October this year, if combined with economic recovery, could lead to a rapid recovery in enterprise notebook PC demand; however, DisplaySearch does not expect this to occur until 2010.
In its Q2’09 Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report, DisplaySearch analyzes the breadth and depth of mini-note and notebook PCs demand in the major geographic regions, and identifies the key variables influencing changing demand patterns in these markets.
“Mini-notes are forecast to continue to be a significant portion of the market. However, as display sizes of these devices have quickly moved from 7.0″ to 8.9″ to 10.1″, and now with the emergence of 11.6″ and 12.0″ mini-note products, it is clear that buyers want a light-weight device, but that they also want a bigger display. While these devices have certainly created a new market, our research indicates that they are predominantly used as secondary PCs by consumers, and are not replacing notebooks,” said John F. Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research and author of the report.
The DisplaySearch Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report is a comprehensive and exclusive compilation of market data from DisplaySearch’s industry sources, along with insightful analysis of the state of the notebook PC industry. More Production Capacity Needed in Chinese LCD Industry 2011
Mar 11th
CRI report – LCD Panel is the foundation and the core of the information industry, and the basis for the development of computer, household appliance, digital electronics, automation, telecommunications, spaceflight and other industries, while its application fields cover almost all the electronic devices.
The Chinese government has carried out a series of policies to support LCD panel enterprises and achieved great progress in fiscal subsidy, land preferential policy, and elimination of backward production capability. In 2009, it was clearly announced in the Plans for Adjustment and Promotion of Electronic Information Industry approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China to support the sixth-generation and above LCD panel projects. Key support will be given to key enterprises to construct several production lines of large-sized TFT-LCD and PDP panels and form large-scale panel production capability. Policies such as the scheme of providing household appliances to the countryside, old-for-new service and HDTV broadcast stimulate the rural consumer market and the consumption desire of urban consumers who haven’t bought LCD TVs from another angle, and become another benefit for the development of China’s LCD panel industry.
Almost all manufacturers of China’s flat panel display (FPD) industry concentrate in the Bohai Rim Region, the Yangtze River Delta Region and the Pearl River Delta Region. Manufacturers in the Bohai Rim Region are located in Beijing as the main axis, extending to Tianjin and Dalian; those in the Yangtze River Delta Region are settled in Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Kunshan and Ningbo; those in the Pearl River Delta Region are located in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Foshan and Dongguan with zonal distribution. In terms of industry chain development, the Pearl River Delta Region ranks first in China for the concentration of world’s top 10 FPD manufacturers here; manufacturers in the Yangtze River Delta Region started early with small and medium sizes, while the increase in end demand brings new development opportunities; manufacturers in the Bohai Rim Region taking Beijing as the center developed late and are experiencing the leapfrog development on the basis of the fifth-generation TFT-LCD production line.
In 2009, China imported 180 million pieces of LCD panels with the total value reaching USD 35 billion; in January-September 2010, China’s import amount of LCD panels was USD 35.27 billion, increasing by 49.30% YOY. Great trade deficit illustrates the blank and backwardness of China’s LCD panels. In general, the higher the generation of production lines of panel manufacturers is, the lower the cost for large-sized panel incision is, the more competitive the manufacturers are, and the higher the technology level is. The sixth-generation production line of BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. was the mainstream in South Korea and Tainwan five years ago, where the major LCD panel suppliers concentrate. At present, the international mainstream has reached the 8.5-generation production line, while Sharp Corporation in Japan has even reached the tenth-generation production line, which means that most manufacturers with the sixth-generation production lines in South Korea and Taiwan have finished the depreciation. Against the background of annual decrease in LCD panel price of over 10%, the price competitiveness of Chinese manufacturers with the sixth-generation production lines lags far behind.
In terms of future supply of China’s high-generation production lines, large-scale production capability will be formed after 2011 according to the plans of existing manufacturers. At present, China’s high-generation production lines under construction include the eighth-generation production line of BOE in Beijing, the 8.5-generation production line of Feilong Electronics in Kunshan and the 8.5-generation production line of TCL and Shenchao Science and Technology Investment Co., Ltd. in Shenzhen, among which the eighth-generation production line of BOE started early and is expected to put into production firstly.

Repair4Laptop Marks First Anniversary With More than 600 Laptop Repair Guides Online and Available Free
Jan 4th
Berlin, Germany (PRWEB) February 22, 2006
Repair4Laptop.org just celebrated a birthday and passed a milestone. The community for do-it-yourself laptop repairs has been online for just over a year. In that time, users have submitted just over 600 guides covering almost all aspects of notebook computer repair. The guides are free to access and share.
“I became addicted to portable computers after my very first one, an HP Omnibook 800,” said Werner Heuser, originator of Repair4Laptop and a respected figure in the Linux community. “While working on the TuxMobil project, I came into possession of many, many laptops, some of which needed repairs. I found it difficult to get free do-it-yourself information on the Internet, so I decided to start a source myself.”
Repair4Laptop (http://repair4laptop.org/) offers a wide variety of resources for repairing, upgrading, modifying and servicing laptops and notebook computers. There are so many laptop brands and varieties on the market, no single person or repair shop can handle them alone. The site, therefore, offers specialized intelligence from experienced and enthusiastic do-it-yourselfers.
“It is a veritable encyclopedia of information about laptop modding, and a useful guide to upgrading, and repairing your mobile gadget,” said Ian Bandy in a post on Laptopical, a mobile computing blog. “It has clear instructions that are written in the main by users themselves, and so is constantly growing and evolving into an even handier tool every day.”
Repair4Laptop depends on plans, advice and pictures contributed from laptop owners around the world. All guides are free with copyright retained and controled by the user who submits the guide. Beginners will find material covering basic upgrade procedures like replacing RAM and a hard disk or changing a broken display. For the experts there are illustrated step-by-step take apart instructions available as well as advanced guides for overclocking laptops and repurposing old laptops.
Most manufacturers do not offer service manuals for their laptops. If they offer guides, they charge handsomely or limit distribution to professionals only. But without a service manual, disassembling, upgrading and repairing a laptop can be difficult, tedious and even result in computer damage. Contracting for professional laptop repair outside of the warranty is often expensive, very slow or exposes secret data to repair workers. In all these cases, do-it-yourself instructions come to the rescue.
All guides on www.repair4laptop.org are ordered by manufacturer and by part, including keyboards, hard drives, optical drives, displays, RAM, CPUs, batteries and more. There is an additional section for portable computer accessories (PCMCIA cards, sun shades, bags, projectors, docking stations and port replicators). A modding section is the place to learn how to push a laptop to its performance limits by adding accessories under the keyboard. Or push it past the limits of imagination by painting and treating the case. A final section shows how to use a old laptop past its computing prime, as a photo frame for example.
A special Wireless LAN section covers topics like adding a wireless antenna to a laptop, building different models of wireless antennas and repairing and upgrading wireless access points.
For the experts who are not satisfied with commercial laptops, there are instructions to make custom made portable computers or assemble bare-bones laptops from components.
“If your laptop is giving you trouble, take a look at this wealth of information, bookmark it and file it under just in case,” Bandy said. “If things ever go a little off track you will be glad you did.”
About Repair4Laptop:
The Repair4Laptop project was founded in February 2005 by Werner Heuser. Working many years for TuxMobil (http://tuxmobil.org), a project dedicated to Linux and portable computers, he often needed to investigate or repair laptop and notebook hardware. Often he found it difficult to get necessary information, so finally Heuser started to collect it himself at Repair4Laptop.

Would You Think The View Television Show Could Be Watched More In The Afternoons?
Dec 16th
That’s what the folks at Walt Disney Co.’s ABC are exploring about The View television show. With Oprah saying goodbye to daytime television in September 2011 to center on the new cable network OWN which she is uniting with the company Discovery Communications, there’s a lot of gunning for Ophra’s place going on in the land of tv which might be calling on The View television show. The View television show could be a perfect fit for this time section in early evening television. While your browsing through this article you can locate a lot of information about The View Television Show
Winfrey’s television show is syndicated, which means that it is not tied to a specific but otherwise is bought by individual television stations from all over the country. The View television show would take the place of Ophra’s show that is shown on ABC’s big-market TV stations, including KABC in Los Angeles, WABC in New York, and WLS in Chicago and tons of ABC affiliates from all over the United States. Another way to say it, it is ABC, its stations and affiliates that are most concerned about fulfilling the hole with The View television show that will be created by Winfrey’s exit.
The View television show has a ton of hype all around it at the present time. Sure there is a lot of attention about Ellen DeGeneres and if Ellen’s distribution company Warner Bros. would try to relocate her show to ABC stations in huge metros (it is watched on NBC stations in the best rated markets, including KNBC in L.A.) when Oprah hits the road, The View television show could be the best fit to relocate into Winfrey’s time sections.
These different scenarios could be very difficultabout The View television show for a number of explanations. First of all, The View television show, which shows in the morning, is a station show, meaning it is only carried on ABC stations. If ABC desired to relocate The View television show to the early evening in Winfrey’s time slots as a station show, then ABC would have to persuade its TV networks to send back an hour of time that ABC as of right now controls. This could prove to be an incredibly difficult mission to complete. Where as a local station airs a syndicated show such as Oprah or DeGeneres, it gets more advertising inventory (about ten mins.) to sell than it could with a station (about 2 minutes). If ABC did need to move The View television show, it almost certainly would need to give up a lot more advertising time to its networks to bring the deal to a close. In Chicago, Oprah’s show shows at nine in the morning. This is a tough situation for the The View television show producers.
An additional plan, maybe less imaginable, would be for ABC, would be to exchange The View television show with General Hospital, which typically airs at three p.m. on most of its stations. The danger there is that General Hospital has been running in the afternoon forever and a shift to early afternoon could intensely cause harm the show, which hangs on as one of the few soap operas left.
In addition ABC is deciding whether to try to turn The View television show into a syndicated show. That would mean that The View television show could be offering it to individual networks for money and commercial inventory. ABC partners might get upset by the thought of losing the show to the highest offeror, although there is a potential of bigger bucks for ABC and their owning company Walt Disney Co. The plus side of changing The View television show into a syndicated show or moving it as a station show is that early evening shows have the power to make more cash than shows that air in the morning. The View television show has the earning power to earn a ton of money if it’s switched.
The View television show is working at a early afternoon talk show. Winfrey gets a more plentiful audience than The View television show and it seems not conceivable that The View television show could expand a whole lot more running in the early evening. ABC could in the end damaging The View television show prosperous franchise. If The View television show changed places with General Hospital as well, it might put in danger both shows. In my modest opinion, I know The View television show is worth the gamble.
Another example, view what NBC had to go through with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien and ask yourself if the possible accomplishments are worth the potential screw-ups.

3 Tips For Making Digital Signage More Effective
Jun 30th
A chief concern among businesses which are considering the use of digital signage is that such a network will be ineffective. Indeed, much of what we’re witnessing in the industry suggests that many businesses don’t understand the potency of the technology nor how to harness it. This is likely due to digital signage being a new and innovative technology. Though many advertisers are experiencing success, standards of usage haven’t been firmly established.
For example, newspaper or television advertising follows proven models of successful. The strategies that are deployed in those media are based upon what has proven effective in the past. Digital signage is new and therefore lacks a benchmark approach. That being said, traditional advertising yields helpful clues regarding what works.
Why The Customer Matters
As advertising has evolved, so too has the consumer’s receptivity to marketing. No longer is the typical consumer content to be bombarded with a litany of marketing messages. Today, they focus on what is relevant to them and quickly discard – or ignore – the rest. Whether you’re deploying a digital signage network in a movie theater, casino, shopping mall, or a small chain of kiosks, the messages you broadcast across the system must address the concerns of the customer in a compelling manner. The experience must be engaging for the customer. Below, you’ll find 3 tips for making your digital signage efforts more effective by focusing on the customer.
Tip #1: Encourage Participation
It’s easy said than done. But, it is possible to create a broadcast that encourages your audience to interact with your message. This can be as simple as leading them through a tree of choices. Or, you can design a complex series of messages that builds your audience’s expectations about your products while allowing them to creatively select their own path through your inventory. There are many ways to encourage participation. You need to identify your customer’s concerns and then engage them.
Tip #2: Use The Data
The digital signage networks that are available today can yield valuable data regarding customer choices. This is one of the reasons why encouraging their participation is critical. When customers interact with your displays and proactively make selections, they do so based upon their interests and the effectiveness of your message and presentation. By reviewing customers’ choices, you can identify parts of your message that are ineffective. That provides the opportunity to modify or eliminate them.
Tip #3: Make The Experience Personal
Whether the experience that a customer has while interacting with a digital screen will be positive or negative is largely dependent upon how personal that experience is. For example, assume that a customer is looking through an inventory of shoes. Each selection will further identify that customer’s concerns. This can provide a framework around which you can tailor your message to address specific concerns based upon gender, age, vocation and other factors. Each selection builds upon the element of personalization. And the more personal your digital signage broadcast is, the more engaged the customer will feel.
Making Digital Signage Effective
Most fundamental principles of marketing address an audience’s interests, concerns and passions. Digital signage is no different. To leverage its effectiveness, you need to engage your customers with messages that are compelling to them. By reviewing the data that your network yields, you can create an experience for your customer that feels personal and encourages them to interact.

Digital Camera Brings More Color in your Life
Jun 27th
This article would surely be of a great help for all the first time digital camera buyers. The trend of digital cameras have not only made photography easier but, it has also produced a great deal of amateur photographers amongst all of us. But there are certain points that we must keep in mind before buying a digital as that would help you to get the right one which suits your requirements.
The first and the foremost point that should be taken into consideration while buying a digital camera is the Mega Pixels. It measures the resolution of the camera, for example, a 4 mega pixels will take an image made up of 4 million pixels. Likewise, the camera with more mega pixels will be able to produce a better quality of image. It is also helpful in saving your pictures on the computer in a better way as the higher mega pixel effect will be able to produce a bigger image with a good zoom which is unlikely in the case of lower resolution(mega pixels).
Also, the higher mega pixel image takes more storage space as compared to a lesser mega pixels digital camera.
Secondly, you must also consider the optic zoom and the digital zoom as another important prerequisite in determining your camera. It is obvious for a buyer to take a digital camera with a good zoom as it helps in taking the distant shorts in a better way. What really matters in taking an image is a good optic zoom as that is what really helps in the zooming function. Digital zoom on the other hand, is a zoom function that helps in editing the image software. It hasps in enlarging an image that looks like more closer to you.
Thirdly, the shutter speed is another determinant of a good camera, as it can bring a good difference to the image quality. You may come across a great variety in shutters while going for a camera. The shutter speed of the camera can play a big role in forming the final picture. And if you combine shutter speed with pro-active aperture, you can bring out the most wonderful results in getting the picture quality.
Thus keep these points in mind while you go to find a digital camera and you will surely have the camera that you always wanted.

Optimize your Digital Workflow and Get More Time Snapping
Jun 27th
Digital photographers can save themselves work in the digital darkroom when processing their photos simply by using the right software program for the job. A long days shooting has the potential of meaning hours of work more in the digital photography darkroom, our computer. Hundreds of pictures taken in the day mean hundreds of pictures that need to be imported into our computer, processed, cataloged and sorted to files.
RoboImport (http://www.roboimport.com) and PicaJet (http://www.picajet.com) automates this task for the digital photographer giving back to photos more time to enjoy the art we love most, capturing our world with the lens.
There are many things we could be doing on location that will save us time away from shooting, but most importantly there are things we should be doing that may even save us days of work that would be best spent photographing. The truth is that good organization and a smooth work flow is the key to optimizing time management.
Simply by using a professional powerful camera downloader like RoboImport at the end of a days’ shooting, you will streamline your digital imaging workflow having the potential to save you hours. Roboimport may be configured to automatically detect your digital cameras connection, read and transfer files while you grab a cola. Certainly there is far more work involved in correctly processing digital pictures than getting them out of the camera and onto the computer. RoboImport will created the files and even rename your pictures according to your specifications. Further RoboImport will automatically rotate your photos and correct resolution where required. RoboImport even add XMP copyright and image subject information to the photographs during the transfer process.
Professional photographers do much more than take great photographs. The work volume involved in ensuring your pictures are adequately labeled and sorted is really not fair. Clients don’t appreciate the work involved, and certainly the end price of our images rarely reflect efforts required. Professional photographers simply cannot skimp on quality to make time, the competition doesn’t allow for second class work. The hours spent working is more like giving something for nothing, except that loving what we do, and being passionate about the photos we take is compensation for this.
The right software programs do give professional photographers the best of both worlds by picking up the desktop workflow giving us more time to spend taking photos.
More work can also be saved for the digital photographer by having an effective well cataloged picture database. PicaJet FX is the ideal software program for this task. PicaJet gives you control of the cataloging of your photos and allows for images to be stored in multiple categories making it fast and easy when searching your photos for the one you need. By taking advantage of OpenGL graphics acceleration the speed that PicaJet performs this task is incredible.
By saving you time automatically importing metadata information and existing folder names to create categories PicaJet removes the work for photographers from the expression workflow. Certainly the work is being seen to without the photographer actually having to do it. You might even come to think of PicaJet fondly as your free employee.
PicaJet might work fast, but there are those times when the work is fairly extensive, you might have a lot of photographs that need resizing or picture file types that need converting. PicaJet does this also, in batches. PicaJet has the ability of almost instantly processing hundreds of photos, a chore that would take perhaps days of work without.
Photographers have better things to do than working. The right digital picture cataloging software, image organizer and digital camera downloader will give you back your time for doing what you really want to be doing, taking great photos.
